The SKAEL Universal Adapter: Connecting Our Digital Employees

The universal adapter gives Digital Employees the ability to pull in any type of data, regardless of how it is organized.

An automation solution is only as powerful as the different systems, data sources, and technologies it can connect within an organization. As Gartner has stated in their 2021 trends report, “Hyperautomation is driven by organizations having legacy business processes that are not streamlined, creating immensely expensive and extensive issues for organizations. Many organizations are supported by a “patchwork” of technologies that are not lean, optimized, connected, clean or explicit.” Getting these patchwork systems connected and exchanging information in a way that can be properly leveraged is a big challenge for any company.


When designing the Digital Workforce Platform, the SKAEL product team wanted to make it as easy as possible for our customers to connect humans to systems, systems to systems, and back, so that our Digital Employees can do any assigned task. We chose to focus on a user experience and incorporates seamlessly into existing business workflows. Having reviewed and used many of the existing automation and RPA solutions on the market, we felt that oftentimes the user experience is neglected and the focus is more on an ever-expanding set of features behind the platform. The SKAEL universal adapter is just one of the elements that sets us apart from the competition and gets our users up and running quickly.

What is the universal adapter?

The SKAEL universal adapter is a standard feature built into Digital Employees. You can imagine the universal adapter acting in the same way as a “universal travel adapter”. It plugs into a number of different inputs and outputs no matter the data source on the other end. The universal adapter is built into the back end of the Digital Workforce Platform, giving Digital Employees the ability to pull in any type of data, regardless of how it is organized.


How does it work?

Digital Employees plug into existing customer communication channels and applications. It then connects into that data source, utilizes and manipulates data, and exports that data to the user when and where they want it.

The data is standardized into a JSON format, which is a standard data format used in many REST APIs. By utilizing our universal adapter right in the Digital Workforce Platform, Digital Employees are able to tie into legacy applications, modern applications, homegrown applications, PDFs, images, email servers, you name it. Allowing different data to be in the same format, the Digital Employee is able to compare data in different applications.

Furthermore, a Digital Employee is able to connect into any type of data source, structured and unstructured, manipulate and filter the data, and provide relevant information back to the end user when, and where they desire.

What are the differences between structured and unstructured data?

According to Accenture nearly 80% of data in the enterprise is unstructured. Information could be sitting in these documents untapped - leaving business-critical insights just waiting to be unearthed. The universal adapter makes this “hidden” data easy to process. Let’s review the differences between structured and unstructured data.


  • Structured data is a standardized format for providing information sitting in some kind of data repository.  For example, data sitting in a Google Sheets document would be considered structured data. This is a predefined structure where Digital Employees can learn where to look for certain information.


  • Unstructured data is information that either does not have a pre-defined data model or is not organized in a pre-defined manner. Unstructured information is typically text-heavy, but may contain data such as dates, numbers, etc. This is data that sits in a PDF, email server, webpage, or images. SKAEL brings in unstructured data, standardizes it, gives it a “structure” in the Digital Workforce Platform, allowing a Digital Employee to pull and push information when needed just like it would do for structured data.
